// Practical lesson / Open WebUI with Ollama

Draw where your AI request goes.

Separate the chat screen, model and connected services.

What you’ll make possible

Make a simple data-flow map for an Open WebUI and Ollama setup.

Open WebUI is the interface; Ollama can provide the model runtime. Both can participate in local or cloud-connected workflows. The interface being on your computer does not establish where every request goes.

Example map: browser → Open WebUI → selected model endpoint. Add separate branches for any search, document processing or other connected tools. This is a planning exercise, not proof that a system is private.

// Your turn

Try this.

  1. Draw three boxes: the browser, Open WebUI and the selected model endpoint. Label the computer or service hosting each one.

  2. Check whether the chosen Ollama model is local or a cloud option. Record the actual selection rather than assuming all Ollama use is local.

  3. Add any connected search or file-processing service. If you cannot inspect it, label its location and data handling unknown.

  4. Write what each arrow may carry, such as prompt text or a document excerpt. Keep private content out of the diagram.

  5. Use the map to decide what needs checking before a real task: access, storage, backups, provider terms and costs. Link to the official setup guide rather than guessing commands.
