Run supported AI models on your own computer, with cloud options available too.

Neurospicy explanation

Ollama helps you download and run supported AI models on your own computer. The model produces the answer; Ollama gets it running and makes it available to a chat app such as Open WebUI. Your computer needs enough memory for the model you choose. Ollama also offers cloud options, so seeing its name is not proof that a conversation stays on your machine.

// Put it to use

A real-world example

You want to see whether a local model can turn a few rough notes into a useful checklist.

  1. Check the current Ollama setup guide and the memory requirements of a small local model.
  2. Download that model and choose the local option, rather than a cloud-hosted model.
  3. Give it a short invented project note and ask it to list the actions without adding facts.
  4. Check the answer and response speed. If you prefer a browser chat window, follow Open WebUI’s guide to connect the running Ollama service.

What you getA small test of what a model can do on your own hardware, with a clearer idea of its speed and limitations.

// The useful bits. The trade-offs.

Is it a good fit?

People exploring local model workflows.

Pros

  • Run supported models on your own computer when your hardware can handle them.
  • Connect a running model to a compatible chat app such as Open WebUI.

Cons & considerations

  • Hardware, model size and context affect performance.
  • A model being available locally does not guarantee accurate answers.
  • Cloud models and connected services have their own data handling and usage terms.
A little more detail

Choose the model location deliberately before starting a task.

Ollama supports local model execution and cloud model options. Its quickstart distinguishes running on your own computer from sending a request to a cloud endpoint.

Before trying a model, check where it runs and what hardware it needs. Start with a non-sensitive example and compare the answer with a result you can verify.

What else could you do?

Try a local writing helper

Ask a small downloaded model to clarify a made-up paragraph, then check what it changed.

Find your machine's limits

Repeat one short task with suitable model sizes and compare speed and answer quality yourself.
